The Oxford Hotel—The Heart of Denver Past, Present, & Future!

The Oxford Hotel right up the street from Union Station!

The Oxford Hotel right up the street from Union Station!

The Oxford Hotel was built in Denver in 1891 one block up 17th Street from Union Station which had opened a decade earlier. Two decades before that Denver came into being as the Gateway to the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush to the south and the Rocky Mountains to the west. The railroads came full steam and Denver, located in the middle of Colorado, emerged and rightfully became the state capitol. Denver is also central to all the United States of America and therefore a good and golden strategic location for the Air Force Academy. Oil and natural gas transformed the small rural town of Denver into a suburban flower with skyscrapers at its core which seemed to shoot up a mile high!

Of course there were ups and downs with boom and bust periods that led to the modern, diversified and thriving Denver of today. Whether from afar, seeing the downtown skyline framed by the snow-capped Rocky Mountains, or closeup with the wrought iron entrance ornamentation of The Oxford Hotel enhanced by the stately Union Station in the background, one easily sees the striking beauty of America’s 19th-most populous city!

The Oxford Hotel is the Heart of Denver—Past, Present, and Future! A stay there, even for one night, makes you a Denverite and a Coloradan for a lifetime! Plus The Oxford Hotel features ‘Stay & Play’ packages with three of the city’s amazing golf courses including City Park which has been recently renovated and has a view of the Denver Skyline to enjoy while teeing it up too!

The ambiance of the lobby speaks for itself and has for well over a century. I was lucky to meet Stuart the Door and Bell Man and hear his personal stories of helping hosting celebrities over his stellar 25-year career! Stories of the Dalai Lama, Lee Majors and Lauren Bacall—and how Lauren Bacall got into bed each night while staying at The Oxford Hotel!

Entering Room 506!

Entering Room 506!

I stayed in Room 506 on the top floor, it was more like a suite—spacious, authentically historic yet modern in function, convenience, and luxury! The 1891 living experience begins with an original lock and key to open the large antique door. Upon opening I was greeted with the sunshine through a wall of large windows, nearly floor to ceiling. An original fireplace is to the left and upon a few more steps the stately bed emerges as the room opens up to the right. The fireplace opening is filled with books to read and the bed is enveloped with pillows galore to lounge upon. With a second glance of my new surroundings I see lots of sitting options with an oversize standalone chair, another one at an antique desk both complimented with the beautifully upholstered leather bench at the end of the bed. A quarter of the suite is walled off into a spacious bathroom complete with all the modern necessities finished off with the period black-and-white hex mosaic tiling on the floor!

I am have been transported to and am living in the 19th Century yet with extreme comfort!

With so much to do in the LoDo (Lower Downtown) area of Denver I opted for a short ride to play the Willis Case Golf Course! No surprise there, right? I met and interviewed Ben Tremayne, the PGA Head Golf Professional. This guy is Mr. Golf in a golfing destination—Denver Golf has seven facilities to play golf!

Ben brought himself to golf and scored an ace that very first year twenty years ago! Willis Case GC has the No. 1 Starting Hole in all of Colorado with a view of the Rocky Mountains that stretches from Pike’s Peak in the south (left) to Boulder in the north (right). Truly ‘spectacular’ as my friend SJ would say! ‘Mile High’ so you get an extra 10-15% carry on all your flighted golf shots! Plus the only water on the golf course is drinking water!

I even played golf with Happy Gilmore (a.k.a. Ryan) and sent the AGTD Mavic 2 Drone up for some scenic videos and pictures of the Willis Case GC and the Denver Skyline!

Willis Case Golf Course only 6 miles from the Hotel Oxford in LoDo Denver. Shorter as the bird flies, longer as my golf ball hooks and slices!

Willis Case is the place to play golf in Denver unless of course you want an even better view of the Denver Skyline on the City Park Golf Course or you want to play Overland Park Golf Course, the original Denver Country Club and the oldest running golf course west of the Mississippi! All three are available with preferred tee times and transportation through The Oxford Hotel’s Denver Golf Experience!

Once back at The Oxford Hotel it was time to relax and adventure out into LoDo—Union Station, the Dairy Block, and a tasty meal right next door at Urban Farmer where the blue corn bread and everything else I put in my mouth was exquisite!

All-in-all it was a grand stay at a grand place with grand experiences and views of Denver and the Rocky Mountains!

Nice evening to walk around LoDo (Lower Downtown). Found Dairy Block very interesting, listened to some live music for the first time in like forever, almost eat there… walked through Denver’s Union Station, almost ate there… then down 16th Street Mall right back to The Oxford Hotel and decided to eat next door at the. Urban Farmer… Blue cornbread & Farmer Burger hit the spot! Andy is pooped! Short night, long drive from Branson, walked 9 holes at Willis Case GC… Good Night, Sweet Dreams to me!
