Interviewing 10 Champions Tour Players about Golf’s Olympic Spirit

I have much to update on my thoughts on what defines the “Olympic Spirit of Golf and Golfers” with an Olympic visit to Atlanta, playing Glen Echo CC, host to the 1904 Golf Olympics, being with U.S. Open Champion Jack Fleck, being around the spirit of Byron Nelson at the Fours Seasons Resort & Club Dallas and Bloggers, Breakfast & Birdies (Twitter #BBBatTPC) behind me. I interviewed ten Champions yesterday here at TPC San Antonio and captured much more insight. As I digest these interviews and share what I learned I will begin to put down on paper what is emerging from this Odyssey- the “Olympic Spirit of Golf and Golfers!”

BLOG Update- Tuesday, 10/22/13 San Antonio, Texas

Tuesday Morning, October 22th, 6:34 am Woke up at the JW Marriott Hill Country at TPC San Antonio!

Andy Reistetter with Tom Horan on 17th Tee, TPC Las Colinas at Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas

I am definitely in golf and great hotel mode! The round Saturday at Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas in the TPC Las Colinas Course was a beautiful experience! I played with Tom Horan, the host of Speaking of Golf who is a great guy! We were joined by Steve, a member at Cherry Hills in Denver and his son Joey who is quite a proficient player as he birdied Nos. 5&6 back-to-back! Joey is a sophomore in high school and it was good playing with him though the saying “C’mon, hit it while we are young, did not apply because well he is young! The par-3 17th is a great hole along with No. 18, both framed by the Four Seasons Resort!

Sadly I rose at 3:30 am on Sunday to drive to TPC San Antonio and the JW Marriott Hill Country for the 10 am Bloggers, Breakfast & Birdies media event (Twitter #BBBatTPC)  which was associated with the Champions’ Tour AT&T Championship this week on the AT&T Canyons Course. It was well worth it for two reasons. There is something about seeing the sun rise, especially when you are on a journey. Every day is a new day and the key is to not have any old expectations or think you know exactly what will happen that day. The second reason was that it was a great event! I met so many cool people and learned so much about social media, especially Twitter. My handle there is GolfJourneyRio and use the hashtag #JoueneyToOlympicGolf when you want to communicate with me via Twitter.

_Bruch Fun 3 Plate (640x480)After a scrumptuous breakfast we played the first nine (Masters lingo) of the AT&T Oaks Course. I was tweeting and somewhat distracted but managed a half way decent shot on the par-3 7th and surprisingly won the Closest-to-the-Pin contest! The gift was a signed TPC San Antonio flag by 2010 Valero Open champion  and Masters champions Adam Scott. I am using it for a raffle this week so please donate to The First Tee to get in! This trip is all about raising $100,000 for The First Tee. Please be one of my 1,000 friends that donate $100 or one of 10,000 that donate $10, the amount does not matter, do what you can and we will get there. Please join me on this trip by doing so!

Of course after a little time at High Velocity where we ate, drank and watched football I snuck back out on the course to take some beauty shots and played the last five holes. The par-3 16th with the bunker in the middle of the green and the mammoth JW Marriott behind (1,002 rooms) is spectacular! I rejoined the group at the firepit and had a great time personally connecting with the fun people to connect with on Twitter. Bloggers and Golfers, all are we!

Yesterday was a great day today as it feels like I am on a golf trip these days! Four of us, an A-List guy, a golf spy and a well-shirted minister played in the morning. Then in the afternoon I headed out to the AT&T Canyons Course and interviewed ten Champions players during a pro-am. I asked them for their reaction to golf being in the Olympics after an absence of 112 years, what they thought defined the “Olympic Spirit of Golfers” and what they thought of this fellow Andy Reistetter and this “Journey to Olympic Golf.” Some really good material! What a blast! Thanks to my recruited volunteer-turned-videographer Tom May!

Here is my first interview with Mike Hulbert gauging professional golfers’ reaction to golf in the Olympics and the “Journey to Olympic Golf.” I played against Mike and Joey Sindelar in one memorable Section IV High School Championship at En-Joie Golf Club, home of the former BC Open and now Champions Tour Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. Memorable in the sense that I did not whiff on the first tee like my teammate and friend Chuck and only got beat by these Elmira/Horseheads boys by a handful of strokes. Okay so it was only a one day tournament!

I forgot that his first win on tour in 1986 was by one stroke over his childhood friend and high school golf rival  Joey Sindelar. Mike was insightful sharing words like “whole different thing, unique and challenging,” but it was his gesture to his heart that spoke to me. Somehow that gesture says it all when it comes to the “Olympic Spirit of Golf.” He had my “yardage” right too, about 13,000 miles to Rio from here!

Today I head to Houston with the intent of interviewing Jack Burke, Jr. at the Champions Golf Club and attending the Opening Ceremony for The Spirit International, an amateur, Olympic-like golfing competition. After that I head into Mexico next Monday, October 28th! Wish me well, I need it! Good living and golfing until the next blog update!

JTOG Day 11: Bloggers, Breakfast & Birdies at TPC San Antonio!

Bloggers, Breakfast & Birdies at JW Marriott & TPC San Antonio on the Way to Rio

Here is a great combination—golf (the par-3 16th) and resort living at TPC San Antonio!

Here is a great combination—golf (the par-3 16th) and resort living at TPC San Antonio!

I left Dallas early in the morning and drove down I-35 to San Antonio to make the breakfast. By noon I was officially a blogger and by 4pm I was out on the AT&T Oaks Course making bogeys. If you invite me to an event I will be as true as I can be to your event. If it is Bloggers, Breakfast & Bogeys, I mean Birdies, then I will do my best! Unfortunately my best may not be good enough. In 29 holes of golf played I failed to make one birdie though I did meet a lot of the biggest and best bloggers out there and enjoyed several fantastic meals including the Sunday breakfast which was really a brunch!

This was another fun stop on my way to Rio for sure! We played a little team event and somehow I won a n Adam Scott signed TPC San Antonio flag. He won the 2010 Valero Texas Open and has won 11 times on the PGA TOUR, including being the first Australian to win The Masters in 2013. The comfort, convenience and luxury of staying on site at the JW Marriott was unbelievable. With the Champions Tour coming in that week for the AT&T Championship I felt like a pro myself. They were playing the AT&T Canyons Course while we knocked it around on the AT&T Oaks Course which hosts the Valero TExas Open in late March just two weeks before The Masters. With 1,001 rooms and two great golf courses and a million amenities, including a water park for kids, young and old alike, the JW Marriott and TPC San Antonio is a Texas-sized resort not to be missed.

Tomorrow, I capture my best ‘Spirit of Olympic Golf’ video from a Champions Tour player with a lot of heart, before heading over to Houston to complete the Texas Triangle of Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.

Check out more pictures below!

I am looking for 100 new friends in the next 100 days to make a $100 donation (or any amount that you are able to make) to The First Tee. JTOG Day 10: Enjoying the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas!

Day 10 of the “Journey to Olympic Golf” (JTOG) was my first “day-off.”I found that one day in a place was never enough. Two days gave me a chance to look around and take a lot more in. Three days was never enough either because once you are there for three days in places like the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas you never want to leave. Especially if they had golf like the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas Course!

CLICK here for an article on the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas at TPC Las Colinas.

The break in Dallas was much needed as I continued to make contacts and plan for the rest of my time in the ‘Texas Triangle’ of Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. Then there was Mexico, Central, and South America beyond the Texan frontier. As it turns out it was a 100-day odyssey so I was 10% through. I knew by this time JTOG was going to be an extraordinary experience. In the first ten days I had already visited two Olympic cities, made friends with an Olympian, connected with the spirit of Bobby Jones, played hickory golf where Olympic golfers did in 1904, visited with Jack Fleck and played some exceptional golf courses! That scenario would only progress exponentially in the months ahead.

Where was I headed next? Today was a good day in that I was confirmed to be part of a Bloggers, Breakfast & Birdies at the JW Marriott at TPC San Antonio.  I wasn’t exactly sure what it was at this point but it was the next logical stop on my way to Rio. As a bonus the visit included a media credential to the Champions Tour AT&T Championship.

One of the best video  insights into what it means to play Olympic Golf was awaiting my arrival in San Antonio. Unbeknown to me, of course. What I did know was that I was enjoying my stay at the Four Seasons in Dallas and I was sure to enjoy my day-off and another night of luxury!

JTOG Day 9: Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts Dallas at Las Colinas

BLOG Update- Saturday, 10/19/13 Dallas, Texas

Saturday Morning, October 19th, 11:38 am Woke up at the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas at Las Colinas!

The Five Diamond Award of the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas.

Every day has been a good day on this “Journey to Olympic Golf” but today will be extra special. I am playing the Four Seasons Resort Course which has hosted the Byron Nelson Championship for the last 31 years. This place is amazing and there is no question what “Five Diamonds” mean in terms of comfort, service and “being home away from home.”

After the sendoff at TPC Sawgrass, Atlanta and St. Louis I did not think this Odyssey could get any better but it did. Staying with and visiting with Jack Fleck and his wife Carmen was a memorable life experience. As much for the golf but just to be around two lovebirds late in life really inspired me as to how much being in a loving relationship can mean in one’s life. I will have much to share on what Mr. Fleck shared with me in later writing and video interviews.

Andy Reistetter with U.S. Open Champion Jack Fleck and Head Golf Professional Jeremy Moe at Hardscrabble CC in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Jack too me out to Hardscrabble CC on Thursday morning and I met another great guy- Head Golf Professional Jeremy Moe. I have a great video of him and Jack and an interesting thing about Moe is that he plays hickory clubs and recently won the National Hickory Open. The highlight of the day and trip so far was presenting a replica 1904 Olympic Golf Gold Medal (which I received from the folks at Glen Echo CC) to Mr. Fleck. It seemed fitting to me that a man who won the U.S. Open at a club named Olympic and did not have the opportunity to play golf in the Olympics really deserved to have that medal, if only with some recognition from me.

Do not speed through McCurtain, Arkansas... they are waiting... you will get a ticket!

No question about it though I experienced the lowest point of the now week old journey Thursday afternoon driving from Fort Smith, AK to Dallas, TX unfortunately through Oklahoma. I was distracted talking to a friend on the cell phone (hands-free by the way) and  was speeding through a little town called McCurtain, OK and deservedly so was pulled over and received a ticket. I drove about 50 feet and paid the $129 fine at the “Municipal Building.” Then, safely I pulled over to do a phone interview with a Jacksonville Times-Union reporter but when I restarted my journey the GPS told me to go onto the Indian National Turnpike. I went 30 miles in the wrong direction with no exits. I was tempted to do a U-turn but did not want to get another ticket!

I am late for my tee time, have to run!

JTOG Day 9: Play TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas

Byron Nelson's golf ball says it all—Player, Teacher, Humanitarian...

Byron Nelson’s golf ball says it all—Player, Teacher, Humanitarian…

So I am at the the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas staying in a villa overlooking the 18th green searching for the spirit of Byron Nelson. What should I do? Be like Byron and play the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas, the host of AT&T Byron Nelson Championship since 1983, over thirty years of championship golf. Not only play the course but play it my friend Tom Horan who has the same kindred spirit of golf, its traditions and history that I do.

CLICK here for a Video Interview with Tom Horan, host of “Speaking of Golf” on the 17th tee at TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas.

With my buddy Tom Horan basking in the sunlight of Byron Nelson at TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas.

With my buddy Tom Horan basking in the sunlight of Byron Nelson at TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas.

The weather, the golf course and the friendship could not have been any better to create a memorable day on the golf course. Byron is right there if you want to go visit him. The oversized statue comes alive with his giving spirit. As you play each hole you are reminded of his presence and great deeds with markers on each tee. See below for the three pictures of the 1st, 17th and 18th that says it all about the man beyond the competitive golf records.

Truly his legend and his spirit live on. How will connecting with Byron Nelson at the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas impact the search for the “Olympic Spirit of Golf?” I am thinking that Mr. Nelson brings the aspect of being free of one’s self, one’s ego to be of support and service to others. Byron certainly did this with his association with the Salesmanship Club of Dallas.  Lord Byron’s work for the kids continues…

My journey would be continuing after my stay in Nelson Paradise. I have to admit I was trying to figure out how to stay for all four seasons at the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas!

I am looking for 100 new friends in the next 100 days to make a $100 donation (or any amount that you are able to make) to The First Tee. Standing in the presence of the great Byron Nelson!

And I found it! How could I not staying at the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas in a villa overlooking the 18th green of the TPC Four Seasons Resort/Las Colinas Course for three nights? The HP Byron Nelson Championship has been in existence since 1944 when Byron Nelson won the inaugural event. Since 1983, when Ben Crenshaw won, it has been played on the TPC Las Colinas Course. This is the heart of Byron Nelson country and his heart and spirit permeated my visit!

The above article captures all aspects of my visit. After a week on the road visiting Atlanta, St. Louis and Fort Smith the three-day respite was welcomed and needed. This was the first day in the ‘Texas Triangle’ of Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. I had no plans for Mexico and Central America other than crossing the border at Nuevo León.

My time in Texas was a key to formulating the exact route of the ‘Journey to Olympic Golf’ and the pursuit of the ‘Olympic Spirit of Golf.’ Stay tuned for all the details in the days ahead…
