The world of hickory golf lost one of it’s finest yesterday.

Harry Mack Horton of Wisconsin left for greener fairways at the age of 89.

His business card read ” Past Perfect ” reflecting his craftsmanship and affinity for hickory golf. The Senior Hickory Trophy for the Iowa Hickory Classic played at Hyperion Field Club in Des Moines is named after Harry for his contributions to our game. We’re proud that he could appreciate that honor while he not only attended but played.

Please raise a glass in his memory.

JTOG Day 67: Bogota is a ‘Must Visit,’ Most Amazing City!

1Bogota is a ‘must visit,’ amazing city in my opinion… staying at the Hilton Bogotá was more than comfortable and convenient, playing golf at Los Lagartos fun, interviewing Colombia’s golf columnist and broadcaster German Calle Sr. (with help from his son interpreter Alejandro) insightful and visiting Monseratte Sanctuary Hill breathtaking! WOW!   (Facebook Post 8 Pics, Andy Reistetter, 12/16/13)

JTOG Day 67: Alberto Valenzuela, Mr. Colombia when it comes to Golf!

Alberto Valenzuela, the premier Golf Course Superintendent & Architect in Colombia.

Alberto Valenzuela, the premier Golf Course Superintendent & Architect in Colombia.

The third chapter of the “Journey to Olympic Golf” started with a flight from Panama City, Panama to Cartagena, Colombia on Monday, December 9th, 2013 and a visit to the Karibana Golf Resort. It was a privilege to meet and play golf with Joseph Mildenberg, part owner and the Sales & Marketing Guru of the only seaside golfing resort in Colombia. He was a happy owner taking note of the extraordinary work down in a short period of time by his new golf superintendent Alberto Valenzuela. The Jack Nicklaus design was lush and a sea of its own emerald green adjacent to the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Joseph would tell you he has brought the Karibana golf course back to life!

Alberto was born in Cali and raised in Bogota. He played golf and was educated at Fresno State in California before constructing golf courses around the world for various designers. Now, back home for good with 29 years of experience in the golf course business he simply says “I am from Colombia” and “golf means everything to me, I sleep, breathe, and eat golf, it is my passion.” That’s why I nicknamed him “Mr. Colombia” when it comes to golf. Of course, that title goes to Camilo Villegas when it comes to playing competitive golf at the highest level and being a champion on the PGA TOUR. The ‘Cheerful Colombian,’ a friend of the Villegas family pointed me in the direction of Camilo’s hometown of Medellin and the Llanogrande golf course he grew up on.

From Cartagena I flew to Bogota for a few days and then to Medellin on Sunday, December 15th, 2013 as a guest of Sergio Saldarriaga, the President of Club Campestre Medellin at both their ‘country’ Llanogrande course and their ‘city’ Medellin course. In Medellin I met and interviewed Camilo and Manuel’s swing coach Rogelio Gonzalez but that is another story to tell and post along with my interview with Sergio. I played the Llanogrande course and spent the next day (Monday, December 16th, 2013) with Alberto and Fernando Villegas who is the father of Camilo and Manuel. What a day of insight into the minds of two great architects. Plus to be where Camilo grew up and to walk the golf course as he did as a kid before going onto the University of Florida and fame and fortune on the PGA TOUR was an awesome adventure. The video below speaks to the teamwork and resulting creativity between Alberto and Fernando. It also includes an interview with Fernando (with Alberto acting as translator) speaking to raising two champion golfers, having them partner together in a World Cup representing Colombia and the possibilities of them playing golf in the 2016 Olympics.

JTOG Day 63-66: Staying at the Hilton Bogota in the Heart of Colombia!

Andy’s Golf & Travel Diary for Thursday, December 12th, 2013, JTOG Day No. 63

Linking JTOG life with a 4-nigth stay at the Bogota Hilton!

Linking JTOG life with a 4-nigth stay at the Bogota Hilton!

I was up at 7 am, had one final breakfast at the Estelar Grand Playa Manzanillo and Roy gave me a ride to the Cartagena Airport to catch the 9:30 am flight to Bogota. I was emailing Alberto to coordinate the Medellin visit (arriving Monday) and the Golf Channel looking for work in the New Year. I realized Colombia is a golfing country, as I later found Argentina to be. Rio de Janeiro has the potential. Claudia, the flight attendant called me a “tourist” in a cute sort of Colombian accent sort of way. I was on the move again, sadly without Torch. I did find borders are easier to cross via airports in South America than driving through with cars like I did in Central America. Still there was a language barrier at times though the travel seemed to be much easier.

Nancy was my awesome chauffeur around Bogota, no need to rent a car!

Nancy was my awesome chauffeur around Bogota, no need to rent a car!

Nancy was there to meet me at the airport with another sign with my name on it. With only three nights to discover Bogota, staying at the Bogota Hilton was one of the wisest decisions I have made in the first 66 days of the “Journey to Olympic Golf.” Not only is it centrally located in the heart of Bogota, being there conveniently introduced me to Colombians who through their interaction with me showed be the heart of all the country of Colombia herself.

Yes, traffic is an issue at times in Bogota. Especially so with street closures for the holiday shopping season to encourage residents to come out for a festive atmosphere. Thought it seemed like a short ride from the airport, a quick check-in and I was home in my spectacular room at the Hilton Bogota.

The next morning I literally walked across the street to meet and interview Colombia’s foremost golf columnist and television personality German Calle Sr. Afterwards I went back to the hotel to catch a ride to Club Los Lagartos for an afternoon round of golf. Later I went to Andres D.C. and enjoyed a memorable night at Bogota’s famous Latin dance club. The next day I traveled a bit south to take a cable car up to Monserrate followed by a tour of La Candelaria, Bogota’s historic district.

Another night of dining and camaraderie with my new golfing pals and sadly it was time to head to the airport and Medellin. I could not have had a better, more meaningful visit to Colombia’s capital city and it all started with the decision to stay at the Hilton Bogota. Please join in my adventure and make one of your own by visiting Colombia and staying at the Hilton Bogota!

JTOG Day 64: Meet Colombia’s Golf Guru Herman Calle Sr.

CLICK HERE for a VIDEO INTERVIEW with Herman Calle Sr., Colombia’s Golf Guru

With son translator Alejandro and his father German Calle Sr.

With son translator Alejandro and his father German Calle Sr.

Yesterday was a travel day, relatively short flight from Cartagena to Bogota. Getting settled into the Bogota Hilton was a breeze. After a good night’s rest I was up and prepared to meet and interview Herman Calle, Sr., Colombia’s Golf Guru. Karibana’s Joseph Mildenberg (or Mildenberg’s Karibana if you like) had set it up for me at his family’s offices in an impressive corner building right down the block in the heart of Bogota’s business district.

Mr. Calle doesn’t speak English and I don’t speak Spanish so our conversation was translated both ways by his son Alejandro who is a lawyer. His other son, the junior, is the Director of the Colombian Open, President of Sportslink and subsequent to my visit, an organizer of a new Web.com event in the Dominican Republic. (Dominic Bozzelli just won the inaugural event). Golf runs as deep and wide in the Calle family as the Villegas family in Colombia.

It was fun to sit down and hear the history of golf in Colombia from German and his son Alejandro.

It was fun to sit down and hear the history of golf in Colombia from German and his son Alejandro.

Mr. Calle’s timing in golf was as they say—the right guy at the right time! Like most people he came to golf through family—his parents were golfers so he became a golfer. His first column, his first printed word in golf, was in 1997 when Tiger Woods emerged onto the scene. Buoyed by the growth of the game worldwide, his first golf broadcast coincided with Camilo Villegas turning professional after a stellar collegiate career at the University of Florida. The sexiest player on tour, who struck a Spiderman pose when reading putts, won back-to-back playoff events in 2006 and rose to No. 7 in World Rankings to become the highest ranked golfer from South America.

I had to get an autograph copy of Mr. Calle's latest column on Colombia Marcelo Rozo becoming the first Colombian to win the Argentina Open, a tournament that dates back to 1905!

I had to get an autograph copy of Mr. Calle’s latest column on Colombia Marcelo Rozo becoming the first Colombian to win the Argentina Open, a tournament that dates back to 1905!

Professionally Calle had a media pass to be right there to witness the explosion of golf in Colombia, as evidenced first-and-foremost by Mildenberg’s Karibana Resort. Colombia is a golfing country and with the transition to become TPC Cartagena at Karibana and host to the Web.com Tour golf has never been better with 63 golf courses to play.

Personally, Calle told me “golf is like a school where you apply most everything you learn” and golf is like life where there are good shots and bad shots and the ball ends up in the hole.” Connecting with father and son in this way I had to share that I could not agree more as a 12-year old recipient of the Ben Hogan Five Modern Lessons book from my older brother L.P. inscribed with the following to his younger brother: “Golf is a lot like life, the more you learn and understand about it, the easier it is to meet its challenge.” We couldn’t agree more on golf and life!

The complete foursome including Joseph Mildenberg at Karibana Headquarters in Bogota!

Hogan was Calle Sr.’s golfing hero and shared details of Hogan’s life and career including the recovery from the bad car accident. This wise man also sees the Olympics as a good thing for golf in Colombia and around the world. As for me, he was pretty excited about the “Journey to Olympic Golf” and thanked me for coming to visit Colombia and wishes more golfers would follow my path through Cartagena—Bogota—Medellin.

As excited I was to meet Mr. Calle, now I was even more excited to get to Medellin and walk in the footsteps of Camilo Villegas on the Llanogrande Course he grew up on. With Alberto Valenzuela, Joseph’s and now German’s help that visit come Monday was sure to be exceptionally good!

But there was still golf to be played and sightseeing to be seen during my 3-day weekend in Bogota, Colombia!

JTOG Day 63: Loving Colombia—Cartagena, Bogota & Medellin!12-12-13

I am loving Colombia & traveling in South America! First Karibana Cartagena – Proyecto Inmobiliario, now the Hilton Bogotá, has to be the best property of Hilton Hotels & Resorts. I miss Torch but not the border crossings, quite adventurous yes, but disorganized & frustrating at times. Airports are better, planes are nice but not as nice as her! (-:   (Facebook Post 6 Pics, Andy Reistetter, 12/12/13)

So VISA for BRAZIL looks to be a major bump in the road on The Journey… spoke with Brazil Consulate here in Bogota… 10 business days, they keep your passport, no exceptions… can’t stay here that long but may have to in Lima, Peru or Santiago, Chile or Buenos Aires, Argentina… thinking Buenos Aires, lots of golf courses there! No luck at the US Embassy either Stuart Perlin!   (Facebook Post, Andy Reistetter, 12/12/13)

Your trip is going well… I’m quite jealous of your courage to drive alone… i’m in Panamá now… if you need somewhere to hang out near the border i would suggest Puerto Iguazuu.. near the Paraguayan Brazilian, Argentine Border….. one of the greatest and most impressive Natural Wo ders of the World.. Las Cataratas de Iguazuu falls which literally dwarf Niagara and a bevvy of cheap hotels… sadly no golf though! Good Luck my friend.. sorry I failed to mention the need of a Visa for Brazil.. totally my bad   (Facebook Post, David Walker, 12/15/13)

JTOG Day 62: Playing TPC Cartagena at Karibana for the 3rd Time!

Andy’s Golf & Travel Diary for Wednesday, December 11th, 2013, JTOG Day No. 62

Karibana—simple, elegant & fun!

Karibana—simple, elegant & fun!

The 100-day, 14-country, 18.471-mile Journey to Olympic Golf (JTOG) is way more than half way over. I probably knew it at the time in terms of days but not country counts. I knew it in terms of days because the plan was to return to the United States for the annual PGA Show in Orlando which starts on the 21st of January. Unexpected invitations would change the plans as they did this day. Based on Alberto Valenzuela’s recommendation I added the city of Medellin, Colombia to see the golf course Camilo & Manuel Villegas grew up on and meet their father Fernando and deleted the country of Ecuador. Though I had met some great Ecuadorians in Guatemala, the timing with the holidays and logistics of getting around Quito did not seem to be working out. After Bogota and Medellin I will be flying to Lima, Peru on the 18th of December.

Golf and Travel is me—I travel to golf and when I am not traveling I golf!

A woody meadow, beautiful but don't hit it there!

A woody meadow of flowers, beautiful but don’t hit it there!

To be at Karibana three days straight and play the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course three days straight was the best ever! I would only play one other golf course three times on the Journey to Olympic Golf—the Cordoba Golf Club in Argentina, the home club of Eduardo “El Gato” Romero and Angel “El Plato” Cabrera. Life was not any better as I walked the TPC Cartagena at Karibana Course for the third time in three days!

The par-3 third hole.

The par-3 third hole.

The first nine is spectacular by itself as you quickly find yourself amongst nature and in solitude with a well-designed golf course that presents itself to you in a beautiful yet challenging way. It is said that the proper course strategy for playing a Nicklaus Course is to simply make your way along avoiding the bunkers. The same is true at Karibana. The doglegs, the trees, six lakes, and the well bunkered fairways and greens make for a child’s playground to play an ancient stick-and-ball game. The 9th brings you back to civilization with only the clubhouse and the tall luxury apartment complexes separating you from the second nine and the Caribbean Sea. If the wind hasn’t already made its presence known to you it will shortly!

Water and sea on the second nine at Karibana...

Water and sea on the second nine at Karibana…

No. 10 heads directly north towards the Caribbean but doesn’t take you all the way there. Not yet, there are still more lakes and some great holes to be played before you find the sea. I did manage one birdie over the three days of play and it came on the par-3 11th hole with a hybrid to six feet and I drained the putt. Twelve is a beautiful hole with a drive to an inverted peninsula fairway and then a mid iron over water to the green. I parred it two of the three days and found water on my approach and double bogey yesterday. I did manage to shoot 80 one day the second day after getting the insider tips from Joseph Mildenberg and Head Golf Professional Mauro Gonzalez.

The namesake ancient city of Cartagena is not too distant across the water from Karibana.

The namesake ancient city of Cartagena is not too distant across the water from Karibana.

But at TPC Cartegena at Karibana it’s not the score that counts, it is the beautiful, exciting and engaging golfing experience that is remembered. Holes 13, 14, and 15 take you out to the Caribbean Sea but you are so engrossed in them you do not notice. In reality the entire second nine has that play-by-the-sea, origin of golf, Old Course at St. Andrews feel without the hillocks and gorse. The par-4 16th and the par-3 17th are right along the sea and its beach. No finer seaside, oceanside, waterside golf in the world! The 17th is my favorite, a sort of sloped, not steep 7th at Pebble Beach though the immense thatched roof beach house beyond the green confirms this is not Stillwater Cove. The par-5 18th is a birdie opportunity that tricks you back into returning to reality which at Karibana is a good reality. The atmosphere off the course, the food and drink is beyond compare.

The 17th at TPC Cartagena at Karibana! Absolutely stunning & beautiful!

JTOG Day 61: Play Karibana, Colombia’s Only Golf Resort on the Caribbean Sea!

1

The scenic par-3 17th awaited me for a second day in a row!

I woke up at 8 am totally refreshed after sleeping a solid 8 hours! Logistically I had a couple of key things on the JTOG list—I had just learned that I will need a visa to get into Brazil and trying to figure out how to get to Quito, Ecuador, the next stop on my odyssey. Of course, getting the visa would turn into a story of its own and everything on JTOG was TBD as my plan-as-you-go trip evolved day-to-day. Today, Tuesday, December 10th, 2013 would be no different.

After doing my electronic backups I headed over to TPC Cartegena at Karibana for another round of golf on the Jack-Nicklaus Signature Design gem. Knowing that it is Colombia’s only golf resort on the Caribbean Sea made it that much sweeter an experience. I continue to be amazed on how well everything works out for me on the “Journey to Olympic Golf”—it truly is a spirited adventure!

Meeting Alberto Valenzuela at TPC Cartagena at Karibana was a stroke of good fortune!

Meeting Alberto Valenzuela at TPC Cartagena at Karibana was a stroke of good fortune!

As fate would have it I met Alberto Valenzuela, the golf superintendent at Karibana and a golf course architect with his own design company. Not only did he escort me around the Jack Nicklaus Course he was nurturing back to green health but he made one very bold statement—” If you do not go to Medellin or Cali then you did not come to Colombia.” He also mentioned that he was doing some design work and upgrades to the Llanogrande Course with Fernando Villegas that his sons Camillo and Manuel Villegas grew up on. Sounded to me like I should go to Medellin after I visited Bogota which Joseph Mildenberg said was a must stop. Flexibility is the key on the “Journey to Olympic Golf!”

I was also flexible in body having taken yoga since the late 1990s. I was ready to go around the Jack-Nicklaus Signature Design TPC Cartegena at Karibana a second time!

Here are my Facebook posts for JTOG Day 61:
