Day 37: The Vintage & Chateau Elan Hunter Valley, Unforgettable, in Every Way…

Day No. 37, by all accounts, was definitely one of the best days of the ‘Golf Journey to Australia!’ I woke up in a bed of luxury at the Chateau Elan, the Australian version, with The Stevens Group, of American entrepreneur Dan Panoz’s (who invented time-release medication through a transdermal nicotine patch) Chateau Elan outside of Atlanta.

My hosts, Kim Whitehouse and Ray Nabulat, had a special surprise for me as I walked over to the clubhouse for a game of golf. Australia (& the world’s) legendary tennis star John Newcombe would be joining me and Ray for my first look at the Greg Norman designed parkland course that has strong links characteristics (once the ball hits the ground, especially around the green complexes, there is unexpected movement from bumps, swales and hollows, which are well hidden from the eye of this golfer. I can’t tell you how down-to-earth ‘Newks’ is, just the nicest guy to play golf with. But I will tell you when I write the feature article.

With the great Australian tennis legend John Newcombe. A really good golfer too!

After playing the back nine I interviewed Mr. Newcombe (hey he is a double Hall of Famer- Australian Sport and International Tennis), Ray (who is one of those sort of quiet guys in the world of golf who has golfed and worked in golf all over the world), Golf Course Superintendent Steve Harris and Golf Instructor Richard Mercer.

Out of all those interviews the longest by far was with Richard Mercer. Already a small world for me here in Australia, I should have recognized and placed the Mercer name. Richard’s father is David Mercer, long time pro at Killara Golf Club in Sydney and his uncle is Alec Mercer who I met and interviewed at the Open at The Australian Golf Club. Here is the interview with Alex Mercer. I think I can do a series of articles with the 40 or so minutes of interviewing Richard. So much insight into great Australian golfers like Kel Nagel, Greg Norman and Adam Scott. Stay tuned for those videos!

Thanks Matt and Christie for the John Legend Concert tip! Have fun tomorrow!

Thanks Matt and Christie for the John Legend Concert tip! Have fun tomorrow!

After lunch I headed out to walk and play the front nine. I met Christie and Matt on the 5th green and let them play through but learned that John Legend is in Hunter Valley for a concert tomorrow. Actually, the concert is right next door at the Bimbadgen Winery and the stage is less than a driver from the 7th green at The Vintage.

I could go on and on but I need to go to sleep now so I can wake up and it will be tomorrow. Needless to say the rest of the day was even better. Some wine and cheese with Linda Miles, the sommelier along with some interesting conversation about how she reads her customers not all that different that how Richard or any golf instructor understands there students. More to be revealed in the feature article. Newks asked me to play 18 with his tomorrow and be his partner! Kim extended my stay a night so I could do so and produced a ticket for me for the John Legends concert. Samantha gave me a sports massage incorporating reflexology all over my body, not just the feet, from what I could tell. Then Executive Chef Tony Maher created a Grange T-Bone steak cooked much to my liking. As I sat there in the restaurant, Nate King Cole and his daughter Natalie sang ‘Unforgettable,’ and all I could do is smile and agree that one day at The Vintage is unforgettable, in every way!

It has been an incredible day here at The Vintage and Chateau Elan in Hunter Valley.

I don’t want the day to end but I do want tomorrow to start!

Definitely a magical place!

An absolute THRILL to play golf with the legendary Australian tennis player John Newcombe. Quite unexpected but this is how it came to be at The Vintage and Chateau Elan Spa…   (Facebook Post 1 Pic, Andy Reistetter, 12/5/14)

Driving up the Hunter Valley into wine country of Australia I could sense I was coming to a very special place. What a beautiful resort The Vintage is! Top-of-the-line, first class in everything they do! I can’t wait to play the Greg Norman designed course in the morning!

Olympic Golf Course Update: 12/3/14 (612 Days to Opening Ceremony)

Rio Olympic golf course progress update (video)

NBC Sports’ Nick Zaccardi posted an update on their ‘NBC Olympic Talk’ (Dec 1, 2014, 2:20 PM EST) with some video of Geoff Shackleford on “Morning Drive.”

YES, grass is growing and hopefully all legal disputes are behind us! Let the grass grow baby! It is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, good grass growing time and there is one more Spring time between now and the start of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio! Only 612 days to go! I can’t wait to find out what test event will be staged there this time next  year! I hope to take Gil Hanse up on his offer to return to Rio and play the new Olympic Golf Course!

I visited the Olympic Golf Course when it was still a sandbox on January 17th, 2014, albeit a well-designed one with a stunning championship golf course within the confines of the ocean and the main Avenida das Américas street in the Barra-Da-Tijuca. I met golf course architect Gil Hanse and his team of what I referred to as his ‘Merry Men’—Neil Cameron (from Scotland), Kyle Franz (from Albany, Oregon) and Ben Hillard (from Australia).

I remember them telling me that Ben Hillard was from the Sandbelt area of Melbourne and hearing comments that the new Olympic Golf Course would be similar to the great Sandbelt golf courses of Australia. Little did I know that, now nine months later, I have played four of the eight ‘Sandbelt Melbourne Classic Golf’ courses—Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, Victoria and Metropolitan on the ‘Golf Journey to Australia.’

All I can say is I think the grass will grow, Gil’s design will come to a competitive and beautiful fruition, there will be tweaks from the text event and on August 5th, 2016 there will be golfers in the Opening Ceremony for the first time in 112 years.

Nobody living in this world (except junior golfers who played in the Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing, China this past August) has played Olympic Golf. I am curious to learn what the ‘Olympic Spirit of Golf; is and how it will manifest itself in Rio in 2016, hence these Journeys to seek out more history and tradition of golf and learn more about the Olympic Spirit by visiting Olympic Cities (so far Atlanta 1996, Mexico City 1968, Rio 2016, Sydney 2000 and Melbourne 1956).

Grass is growing in Rio on the OGC, life is good, 612 days until Golf returns to the Olympics with a unique Spirit for sure!

Here are photographs from my time in the Sandbox to compare to those in the video:

More details from the Nick Zaccardi post from ‘NBC Olympic Talk’ on NBCSportss.com:

Rio Olympic golf course construction is progressing with all but two of the fairways sprigged and grassed, course architect Gil Hanse said, according to Golf Channel’s Geoff Shackleford.

“It does seem likely that the course is now going to be finished,” Shackleford said on “Morning Drive.” “I’m going to say that very carefully.”

The course for the first Olympic golf tournaments since 1904 has seen delays, pushing back a planned Olympic test event tournament from one year before the Games to late 2015 or early 2016.

The course has the right amount of elevation change and will look amazing because it’s in the heart of the city, Shackleford said.

“Hopefully, by the time we get to the Olympics, it will all be forgotten, and the golf course will be the great golf course and test I think Gil is capable of producing,” he said.

Today, Day No. 34 of the ‘Golf Journey to Australia’ was a ‘rest & catch up’ day…check out the updated website detail for each day… so far played 20 golf courses, slept in nine different beds (yet to sleep in rental car which is a good thing), visited three Australian States (New South Wales, Victoria & Tasmania), and covered two Australasia PGA tournaments (Masters & Open). Official Summer Season began arbitrarily, not astrologically, yesterday on December 1st in Australia… getting HOT here and I am heading north towards the Equator for the PGA Championship on the Gold Coast in Queensland… http://www.andygolftraveldiary.com/journey-to-australia/   (Facebook Link & Post 1 Pic, Andy Reistetter, 12/2/14)

Phillip Hughes: Australian Batsman Dies, Aged 25

Australia Test batsman Phillip Hughes has died aged 25, two days after being struck on the top of the neck by a ball during a domestic match in Sydney.

_Phillip HughesIs this a Godsend or what? As explained to me by my mate Terry:

Phil Hughes was on 63 runs in his innings when he was hit on Tuesday & died on Thursday. As a tribute Australian Cricket have officially changed the records of the match from 63 retired hurt, to 63 not out, on the weekend junior cricketers who usually have to retire at 50 runs were able to reach 63 where they retired at 63 not out. On Sunday at the 9th hole being the 63 rd hole of the Australian Open, there was a cricket bat & ball at the Tee box to honour Phl. Then Speith goes out & smashes the course record by 2& post a 63 ( On what would have been Phil Hughes birthday)

Thanks for sharing Terry!

Thanks for sharing, Andy Reistetter. There are no coincidences. If we’re open to seeing these kinds of events in our world, they’re much more frequent than most people think. I had two examples in my world today. And though I hate that Phil Hughes passed, the surrounding elements of this story and Jordan’s final Sunday round made me smile. And appreciate a beautifully connected universe.   (Facebook Post, Mitch Laurance, 12/1/14)

Day 32: G’day for Spieth Down Under, Record 63 Wins Australian Open!

Jordan Spieth won his first professional tournament last year in the USA and won his second in Australia in 2014.

Jordan Spieth won his first professional tournament last year in the USA and won his second in Australia in 2014.

The young man, who came to the golfing world officially at age 16 at the Nelson in 2010, said a low round on Sunday couldn’t be done, and then he went out and did it in American style, shooting a course record 8-under 63. Lone American amongst the top 15 golfers teeing off at The Australian Golf Club in the National Open of a great golfing island continent country, he birdied the second, then three in a row starting at No. 5 and then sprinted to the title birdieing four of the last five holes and winning by six strokes. Brett Rumford, tied with Spieth and Greg Chalmers to start the final round, matched those three consecutive birdies but could not keep up the pace to the clubhouse and shot a 70 to finish solo third. Chalmers started with a birdie and had two others that were negated with three bogeys. The lefty shot 71 and finished  in fourth place. Rod Pampling birdied five of the last six to shoot 68 and finish in solo second place.  Adam Scott double bogeyed the par-5 fifth that ignited Spieth, shot 71 and finished fifth. A good consolation prize for Pampling, Chalmers and Rumford was qualifying for the 2015 Open at St. Andrews in the first of 14 such events in nine countries on five continents.

This was Jordan Spieth’s first trip ‘Down Under’ to Australia and he enjoyed every moment of it on and off the golf course. I feel the same way on Day No. 32 of the ‘Golf Journey to Australia.’ A comment made by Troy Grant, the Deputy Premier Minister for Tourism, in the Awards Ceremony on the 18th green, that Jordan is a “credit to golf and a credit to his country,” inspired me to ask the following question in the champions’ interview:

Q.   Jordan, it seems like yesterday you were 16 and you kind of came out to the golfing world as a nelson. Can you talk a little bit about the progression to today and winning the national championship of such a prestigious golfing nation, and what it means to you to hear the deputy premier minister for tourism say you’re a credit to golf and a credit to
your country?

JORDAN SPIETH: That took me back. I was as close to tearing up as I got out there. Those words are words, you don’t necessarily expect to hear them and when you hear them it’s a tremendous honour and one that carries weight. I certainly need to conduct myself for me and my family, my country, the team, whatever. So that was really nice of him.

Jordan with the winner's check. It's all about the win and being the best he can be for this impressive young man.

Jordan with the winner’s check. It’s all about the win and being the best he can be for this impressive young man.

Yeah, since I was 16, that first professional experience as an amateur was what put belief in my head that this is what I could do for a living and that I wanted to be the number one player in the world some day. It was that week that I really knew that it was possible if I really stayed at it and worked hard, having that opportunity. So since then still had some junior events, through college golf, University of Texas, winning a national championship there. Each year there were certain goals that I wanted to achieve and wanted to get better each year, and that was the goal.

Each year had something that was a little better than the last and I felt like I was better as a golfer, better mentally and with my skill set, and this year I believed it was an improvement on last year but without a win, which was a goal of mine, to have a win in 2014 and I only had two events left. So to finally accomplish it now, this is the peak of where I’ve ever been as a golfer and it’s really cool and hopefully we work to climb more higher peaks.

Seeing Jordan win and win in such a convincing fashion was beautiful and made me proud to be an American. What a week it has been at the Australian Open at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney.

Saturday, with a tricky and difficult Australian Nor’easter wind , turned out to be ‘Stay Where You Are, If You Are Lucky’ day at the 88th rendition of the historic Australian Open. Greg Chalmers, the Round 2 leader, did just that posting an even par 71 after a bogey-bogey start to hold on to a share of the lead at 5-under par with fellow Australian Brett Rumford and American Jordan Spieth, both shooting 2-under 69.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy came unraveled with a triple bogey on the 9th hole from the high grass above the green right and followed it with a sloppy double bogey at the 10th to fall out of contention. Being six strokes back with thirteen to pass, it is unlikely the Northern Irishman can win in his last round of the year.

The magic stay-put number on Saturday was 69 and Adam Scott achieved it by offsetting a lone bogey with three birdies. Rod Pamphling’s route to a 69 was dunking his approach shot on the par-4 10th for a heroic eagle 2. Both are tied for 4th one stroke back. Out of the final twelve golfers teeing off on Saturday only four, Rory and his playing partner Adam Crawford who shot 76 and Geoff Drakeford and Conrad Shindler who both shot 81 in the wind, fell out of the top echelon at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Australian Golf Club. Daniel Nisbet, out in the first pairing, 3-1/2 hours before the leaders teed off shot the day’s best round of 67 and moved from last place to T9, five strokes back of Chalmers, Rumsford & Jordan. Staurday was definitiely ‘Stay Where You Are, If You Are Lucky’ day at the 2014 Australian Open.
