I went to Dallas to capture the Spirit of Byron Nelson. I spent three nights at the Four Seasons Resort & Spa in a villa overlooking the 18th green of the TPC Four Seasons Resort/Las Colinas Course. The HP Byron Nelson Championship has been in existence since 1944 when Byron Nelson won the inaugural event. Since 1983, when Ben Crenshaw won, it has been played on the TPC Las Colinas Course. There is golf history everywhere on this resort property but especially on the Byron Nelson Plaza where, in the watchful eye of a clock tower (Byron loved clocks), there is a nine foot statue of the Legend of Golf. What I realized is that when you are 30-40 yards away from Mr. Nelson’s statue he looks almost mortal, no bigger than any of the golfers that pass by, even another charter member of The Sports Club, also named Byron Nelson (true fact, no relation). But when you come closer, talk to folks who knew him personally and absorb the memorabilia in Champions Hall you get a sense of the Spirit of Byron Nelson.

I received an awesome tour of the property from Vail Tolbert, the Director of Public Relations. Then  I interviewed Tim Cusick, the Director of Golf Instruction and Rob Cowan, The Sports Club Manager along with the other Byron Nelson, an amateur member of the Sports Club.

The highlight, of course, was playing the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas course (no pun intended). My playing partners were Tom Horan, host of the popular Golf Talk America radio program “Speaking of Golf,” and a delightful father Steve & son Joey duo from Denver, Colorado. We surely felt the presence of Byron on his golf course at his home club.

I had the pleasure of corresponding with Mrs. Peggy Nelson who I met at the 2010 BNC when she released her book, Life with Lord Byron: Laughter, Romance, and Lessons Learned from Golf’s Greatest Gentleman. Here is a Q&A with Mrs. Nelson:Andy Reistetter, Journey to Olympic Golf:   What are your personal thoughts about the Olympics? What is your favorite event, favorite Olympian, most memorable moment and why? Did you and Byron watch them on TV or ever attend in person? Do you have any recollection of conversations you had with Byron about the Olympics in general?

Mrs. Nelson:     Byron and I always admired Olympic athletes and the dedication and sacrifice it takes for both them and their families to reach that highest point of endeavor, no matter which sport it is.  My favorite event would be figure skating, and Peggy Fleming was quite a heroine for me–I was honored to meet her one day many years ago and she was so lovely and gracious–every inch the champion still.  Of course, her Olympic victory was before the event became so prodigiously athletic with all the requirements for multiple jumps, so grace and fluidity were more important.

Byron and I never attended an Olympic event  but watched quite a bit on TV, and were always amazed at the talent and determination the athletes displayed.  We didn’t talk about it a lot nor do I recall Byron saying anything specific about the events, though he enjoyed watching.  I think he liked the summer sports more, because he was never a fan of cold and snow!

Andy Reistetter, Journey to Olympic Golf:     Byron played on two Ryder Cups and captained a third team. What did it mean to him to play for his country? What emotion would characterize it best? What thought or story was his favorite about the Ryder Cup?

Mrs. Nelson:     Byron loved playing and captaining in the Ryder Cup–he said being selected captain by the team was the greatest honor he ever received in golf.  Of course, he loved America and so was very proud to play for the USA; at the same time, when the Ryder Cup was held in Portland, Oregon in ’47 and the British team’s expenses were provided by an American. Byron was very pleased to be part of that team as well as being glad the competition could resume.  As for stories, you might check his autobiography How I Played the Game, because there are several in there.

Andy Reistetter, Journey to Olympic Golf:     Golf will be played in the Olympics for the first time in 112 years in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In your opinion, what would it have meant to Byron to be an Olympic Golfer? How do you think he would have defined the “Olympic Spirit for Golfers?” How would it have differed, if in any way, from his Ryder Cup experience?

Mrs. Nelson:     One of the things Byron admired about both the Ryder Cup and the Olympics was the spirit of good sportsmanship that pervades both types of competition.  I don’t know that he ever realized there had been golf in the Olympics so long before he was even born, but he surely would have loved to be on the American team–well, if he could maybe have qualified ….!

Good luck with your Olympic Story!

Thank you Mrs. Peggy Nelson for your wonderful insight and sharing Byron with his admiring golf fans through your book and theses responses.   Andy Reistetter, Journey to Olympic Golf

Memories of the 2014 PLAYERS Championship Won by Martin Kaymer!

5The 2014 PLAYERS Championship was a heartbreaker for the locals as Martin Kaymer made an unbelievable  putt on the 17th green while Jim Furyk missed a makeable birdie putt on the 18th green to tie. After a rain delay, Kaymer came back out and parred the home hole for his first PLAYERS Championship.

It was a great PLAYERS that featured the near miracle Sunday 66 comeback by Furyk, but headlined Kaymer ‘s 63 to start on Thursday and his persistent wire-to-wire win. Kaymer went on to win the U.S. Open in June by eight strokes at Pinehurst for his second major victory (2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits)!

Jericho School HUGs Autism at Hidden Hills Golf Tournament

With Angelo Martinez, Russ Libby and Jarrad Kogos at Hidden Hills CC.

What to do on PLAYERS Monday with no public practice round at TPC Sawgrass? I headed over to Jacksonville’s Hidden Hills Country Club, a secluded Arnold Palmer Signature Course, and played in the HUG/Jericho School Charity Golf Golf Classic presented by Delegal Law Offices. In 1995 a group of concerned parents and business leaders found the need to establish a new school for children with autism in Jacksonville Florida.  The Jericho School was created to make available the best practices in early childhood development and education to families who have children with developmental disabilities.  The Jericho School has become a model program and a leader in the treatment of children with autism and the application of Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior. HUG (Help Us Golf) is Jarrad Kogos’ charity to help kids with autism come to the game of golf for fun, for exercise and for some to become quite proficient at the game we all love. Jarrad teams up with the H.E.A.L. Foundation to host a summer camp at TPC Sawgrass. If you don’t know Jarrad, click here to get a chance to meet him.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo with Jarrad Kogos and Alena Gilley.

The staff at Hidden Hills CC put on a wonderful event. Owner/Manager Russ Libby, who was on site to greet the participants, is a candidate for PGA of America Secretary 2014. This position is in succession to the become the president of the PGA of America, an organization of 27,000 PGA Professionals with a worldwide impact on the business and the game of golf. Angelo Martinez, Executive Director of the Jericho School and Mike Barile, Chairman of the Board of Directors, along with Jarrad hosted the golfers on a picture perfect day weather and all ways. T.A. “Tad” Delegal, III of Title Sponsor Delegal Law Offices was on hand to manage his winning foursome who shot 60 and won the “Margarita Mixer” Bucket in celebration of “Cinco de Mayo.” The Murray Brothers Foundation supported the tournament with several Caddyshack and Monument Men items that were raffled off in a silent auction. Alena Gilley was on hand as a volunteer and promoting her Paradise Grooming for Men  Salon & Spa.

All is all a great experience for worthwhile charities. Make note to self… play HUG/Jericho School Charity Golf Golf Classic next year!

Jim Ferree, Golf’s Southern Gentleman at Heart and In Deeds…

Portrait of Jim Ferree in the Jim Ferree Room at Long Cove Club.

Portrait of Jim Ferree in the Jim Ferree Room at Long Cove Club.

Golf is a game of gentle people, women and men, that regard the game above that of their own individual domain. Golf is a game of tradition, of honor, to be passed from one generation to another in a way that preserves its history and place in sport. Over the years I have gained an appreciation for the Low Country of South Carolina with its tidal salt marshes, Southern Charm and Southern Hospitality. I was intrigued by the opportunity to interview Jim Feere, a literal Legend of Golf, at the Long Cove Club, the exclusive private club on Hilton Head Island. I would learn a great deal more about the heart and deeds of Golf’s Southern Gentleman, the poster child of senior golf whose silhouette is the logo golfer of the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour.

My biggest challenge with interviewing Jim Ferree was condensing down the hour long videotaped interview into 17 minutes of a two-part interview. Then again into a minute and a half of highlights. The long unedited versions belong in a seminal book of Southern Storytelling at its finest.

Just sitting there and listening to Mr. Jim Ferree was quite an honor and privilege. Definitely one of golf’s grandest gentlemen!

Sitting there in the Jim Ferree Room at the Long Cove Club with Jim Ferree below his inspiring portrait reminded me of another of golf’s great gentleman, Bobby Jones and his portrait that hangs above the fireplace in the clubhouse at Eastlake Golf Club. Impeccably dressed, Mr. Ferree was more than charming and more than funny as he told stories that bridged the days in golf and his life from Jones to the present. His respect, admiration and love for his namesake father was evident from his first mention. The same is true for his perspective of golf and his lifelong love affair with it.

The Long Cove Club shines so bright that there are sunspots in person too!

The Long Cove Club shines so bright that there are sunspots in person too!

Born near Pinehurst, North Carolina he came to golf almost by birthright. Jim’s father Purvis, was the long-time pro at Winston-Salem’s Old Town Golf Club, a historic Perry Maxwell design. As life will do with birthrights, the reality of The Depression and World War II intervened into Jim’s life. A career in golf wasn’t really his choice but presented itself and he seized the opportunity with good play winning his first and only PGA TOUR event in 1958—the Vancouver Open. The yips came and seized his competitive career and then went with the long putter. a.k.a. as the broomstick. Mr. Ferree endured to become one of the early champions of the Champions Tour and won twice out there as it transitioned from its inception as the Senior Tour.

We were itching to get out to that first tee!

We were itching to get out to that first tee!

On and off the tour circuit there were club pro jobs in the summer in Pittsburgh and in Savannah in the winter which putt him in close proximity to the advent of Hilton Head Island and the Long Cove Golf Club. He was there before the beginning, making trips up to Indianapolis (in the winter mind you) convincing Pete Dye to take the Long Cove Club design job and walking the course with him as it emerged from the beautiful and pristine Low Country. The lists of names of the Director of Golf and Head Golf Professional are short at clubs like Long Cove Club and Jim Ferree and his wife Karen are on those lists respectively.

In the second half of the interview, Mr. Ferree continues to share stories of his inspirational life and golf career. Then it turns to something near and dear to his and the club’s heart—junior golf and passing the thrill and legacy of golf on to the younger generation not just here in the Low Country but around the world in places like Scotland Mr. Ferree and the Long Cove Club are giving back to the game they love in terms of support of the First Tee of Hilton Head and by hosting the Morcott Cup an annual cultural exchange and golfing competition between youth here and in there where golf began.

It was an inspiring morning at the Long Cove Club interviewing Mr. Jim Ferree in his own room. Bobby Clampett is Making a Major Impact in Golf

With Bobby Clampett and the ‘Impact Zone’ book at the 2014 PGA Show.

We all remember the hot-shot amateur from California who was the low amateur at the 1978 U.S. Open and the 1979 Masters. The name Clampett hits squarely on the face as a PGA Tour winner and long time member of the CBS Sports broadcast team who recently joined the Champions Tour with success. Clampett’s game was influenced early on by Homer Kelley, one of golf’s all-time influential swing coaches, and his book The Golfing Machine. Now three-plus decades later, and six years after co-authoring the book “The Impact Zone: Mastering Golf’s Moment of Truth” with Andy Brumer, the Californian with an infectious smile and good nature, is positioned to make a ‘Major Impact’ to the game of golf. My how time flies and seeds planted long ago grow into big oak trees that change the landscape of golf.

Bobby making an impact at the 2014 PGA Show.

Bobby making an impact at the 2014 PGA Show.

Simplicity and “out-of-the-box” thinking when it comes to coaching is what makes Bobby and his ‘Impact Zone’ very different than other golf instruction. Think about it, the real purpose of the golf swing is to make impact, dynamic impact with the golf ball. No more, no less, same as driving a car from Point A to Point B. It does not matter what type of car you drive as long as it gets you there when you need to be there. Simplicity is not a common element of various other golf instruction programs.

So too is accepting your ‘style of swing’ and then simply focusing on the impact of the golf club on the golf ball. There are many ways to get to that impact zone and why not focus on the purpose? No different than living in the moment. Yes there is a past back swing and a future follow through but all that matters is the moment of impact. Sounds revolutionary doesn’t it?

Bobby signing the 'Impact Zone' book at the 2013 PGA Show. Every year the 'Impoact Zone' makes a bigger impact in the game of golf.

Bobby signing the ‘Impact Zone’ book at the 2013 PGA Show. Every year the ‘Impact Zone’ makes a bigger impact in the game of golf.

I always look forward to interacting with Bobby. A few Masters ago he had a club in the corner of the broadcast booth frequently gripping it and going outside for a few swings as he prepared for the Champions Tour. Reminded me of my childhood growing up watching the Masters on TV and having my Dad or older brother ‘LP’ grab the club from the corner to launch a discussion of grip, stance, swing and golf and life in general. Now Bobby has launched his teaching organization has over 100 teachers certified in “Impact Zone Golf.”

Enjoy the video interview from the 2014 PGA Show. I did as I always learn something new from Bobby and find him entertaining and varied yet focused so it is fun too. Bobby was a three-time collegiate All-American and represented  the United States in Olympic-like golf competitions, first as an amateur winning the individual World Amateur medal and then as a professional in the 1982.

Alberto Valenzuela, Mr. Colombia when it comes to Golf!

Alberto Valenzuela, the premier Golf Course Superintendent & Architect in Colombia.

The third chapter of the “Journey to Olympic Golf” started with a flight from Panama City, Panama to Cartgena, Colombia and a visit to the Karibana Golf Resort. It was a privilege to meet and play golf with Joseph Mildenberg, part owner and  the Sales & Marketing Guru of the only seaside golfing resort in Colombia. He was a happy owner taking note of the extraordinary work down in a short period of time by his new golf superintendent Alberto Valenzuela. The Jack Nicklaus design was lush and a sea of its own emerald green adjacent to the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Joseph would tell you he has brought the Karibana golf course back to life!

Alberto was born in Cali and raised in Bogota. He played golf and was educated at Fresno State in California before constructing golf courses around the world for various designers. Now, back home for good with 29 years of experience in the golf course business he simply says “I am from Colombia” and “golf means everything to me, I sleep, breathe, and eat golf, it is my passion.” That’s why I nicknamed him “Mr. Colombia” when it comes to golf. Of course, that title goes to Camilo Villegas when it comes to playing competitive golf at the highest level and being a champion on the PGA TOUR. The ‘Cheerful Colombian,’ a friend of the Villegas family pointed me in the direction of Camilo’s hometown of Medellin and the Llanogrande golf course he grew up on.

With Fernando Villegas & Alberto Valenzuela at Llanogrande for breakfast.

From Cartegena I flew to Bogota for a few days and then to Medellin as a guest of Sergio Saldarriaga, the President of Club Campestre Medellin at both their ‘country’ Llanogrande course and their ‘city’ Medellin course. In Medellin I met and interviewed Camilo and Manuel’s swing coach Rogelio Gonzalez but that is another story to tell and post along with my interview with Sergio. I played the Llanogrande course and spent the next day with Alberto and Fernando Villegas who is the father of Camilo and Manuel. What a day of insight into the minds of two great architects. Plus to be where Camilo grew up and to walk the golf course as he did as a kid before going onto the University of Florida and fame and fortune on the PGA TOUR was an awesome adventure. The video below speaks to the teamwork and resulting creativity between Alberto and Fernando. It also includes an interview with Fernando (with Alberto acting as translator) speaking to raising two champion golfers, having them partner together in a World Cup representing Colombia and the possibilities of them playing golf in the 2016 Olympics.

Journey Artwork is Coming…

An “in progress” photograph of the JTOG artwork from Suzanne McCourt.

Suzanne McCourt, the Olympic Golf Artist, has created a special piece of artwork to celebrate the “Journey to Olympic Golf.” The artwork will be revealed soon. Here is an “in progress” photograph of her work. I first met Suzanne at Pebble Beach where she became the first woman to have her artwork on the cover of the program for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Since then she has contributed to golf in a number of ways including a First Tee fundraiser at TPC Sawgrass and creating a piece of artwork celebrating Ken Venturi’s golfing career and induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
